LHA's 2009 Annual Winter Healthcare Leadership Symposium

This year's symposium was an exceptional learning and networking opportunity, with over 180 healthcare and hospital leaders in attendance. Some of the highlights from the event:
  • DHH Sec. Alan Levine, Sen. Willie Mount and Rep. Hunter Greene participated in the Legislative Forum, along with LHA staff, John Matessino, Clark Cossé and Sean Prados, to discuss healthcare reform, the budget deficit and other pressing legislative issues facing hospitals.
  • Dr. Donald Palmisano, founder and president of Intrepid Resources, discussed his book, “On Leadership: Essential Principles for Success.” This session included a guided analysis of real-life situations from which participants learned practical methods and strategies for becoming leaders.
  • Using the most current data, well-known economist Dr. Loren C. Scott discussed the national recession and the economic status of each region of the state.
  • Jennifer Nord Mallard from the American Hospital Association gave a federal update on “What to Expect from the New Administration and Congress.” During this presentation, she discussed the current political environment; immediate issues, including SCHIP and the economic stimulus package; and the AHA’s 2009 advocacy agenda.
  • William Slaughter, president of SSA Consultants, covered Blueprint Louisiana’s Healthcare Reform Strategy for 2009. Slaughter said healthcare will be the most critical issue that they take on this year.
  • To encourage more hospitals to get involved in the Donate Life Louisiana Hospital Campaign, Pulitzer prize-winning author and advocate, Jeffrey Marx, gave an inspirational presentation about organ donation and the journey of his sister, Wendy.
